About Joanna May

The person behind the camera

I’m Jo — a South Wales-based photographer specialising in weddings and the early days of motherhood, with an empowered boudoir offering rooted in confidence and connection.

I photograph people as they are, in the moments that feel real rather than performed. My work is calm, documentary-led, and centred around connection — the quiet pauses, the in-between glances, and the moments you don’t always realise you’ll want to remember until time has passed.

Photography, for me, isn’t about perfection. It’s about honesty.

Why I photograph the way that I do

I’m drawn to the parts of life that are fleeting and emotionally full — wedding days that pass in a blur, the tender intensity of early motherhood, and the quiet confidence that comes from seeing yourself differently.

I know how easy it is to feel unsure in front of a camera. Most of the people I work with tell me they’re nervous beforehand, worried they won’t know what to do, or that they don’t look or feel like themselves.

That’s why my approach is gentle and unhurried.

I work in a way that allows space — for emotion, for pauses, for real life to unfold — guiding only when it’s helpful and stepping back when it’s not. My aim is always for the experience to feel calm and supportive, not overwhelming.

What you can expect when working with me

When you book a session with me, you won’t be rushed, directed constantly, or asked to perform.

Instead, you can expect:

  • a relaxed, grounded presence on the day

  • gentle guidance without stiff posing

  • an experience that adapts to real life

  • thoughtfully curated images that tell a complete story

Whether I’m photographing a wedding day, a newborn session at home, or an empowered boudoir shoot, the intention is always the same — to create images that feel honest, meaningful, and true to you.

A little more personally

I’m based in South Wales and photograph sessions across the region.

Outside of photography, I’m someone who values slowness, connection, and balance. I believe that meaningful work comes from being present, and that’s something I bring into every session — whether I’m quietly observing or gently guiding.

Photography has taught me to notice the beauty in ordinary moments, and it’s a privilege to do that for other people.
